Access Sciences
Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality EDMS

My most recent work was with Access Sciences. Access Sciences is a consulting and business process outsourcing firm, specializing in information governance, technology enablement, and business strategy. The project I was brought in to help with was a redesign of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality electronic document management system (LDEQ EDMS).
The Project
Access Sciences was tasked with redesigning the LDEQ EDMS. The existing EDMS functioned but was very outdated and clunky to use. LDEQ wanted to keep the existing functionality but update the look and feel. When I was brought in, the project team had been working with LDEQ stakeholders and had already assessed requirements and project goals. My job was to take the proposed mockups and information architecture and turn it into a polished prototype. Below you can see some images of the initial mockup.
THE Process
I started on the project by familiarizing myself with LDEQ's website, the existing EDMS, and the requirements and notes the project team had already agreed upon. Once I better understood the EDMS, I started crafting low fidelity wireframes making sure to stay within Bootstrap grid system guidelines. Since the team had already settled on content and functionality, the challenge was coming up with a color theme, creating UI interactions, and creating a polished prototype. For the color theme, I wanted to match the LDEQ official website as close as possible by using their greens and blues throughout the EDMS. In addition, since a lot of the EDMS involves data tables I made the tables light grey and white so they were easy on the eyes.
Once I had a style together I presented my ideas to the team. The team liked the progress I was making and gave me a few notes for changes including creating a new landing page for the EDMS. I went to work on the landing page and after a few group design sessions we decided on the existing design today. Once the style, colors, and font were approved I prototyped the wireframes using UXpin to show examples of the different UI interactions throughout the site. When I was finished with the prototype I presented a demo to the project stakeholders and development team to showcase the final design. As my final contribution to the project, I walked the development team through UXpin and the handoff materials I created so the developers would have the design specific information they needed to build the design (font sizing, spacing, color hex codes, icons) . Below you can see some screen shots of the final prototype.
The redesigned LDEQ EDMS is currently live and can be found at:
